Sodium gluconate,also names natrium gluconate,gluconic acid sodium salt,is a white or off-white crystal powder.
Sodium gluconate can significantly inhibit the reaction between C3A and CaSO4.2H2O,delays the hydration reaction of C3S,so sodium gluconate is commonly used to delay the setting of cement and concrete,increase the fluidity of the Portland cement mortar.
So it is used to formulate set retarding admixture,and used in concrete where delayed setting and extend workability are desired,long distance transportation of concrete,pumped concrete and hot weather concreting
